About Us
Mr. Andrews started playing guitar on a Sears Kay Silvertone electric at age 7, with an amplifier his uncle built. His father was in the Army which meant many different teachers in lots of countries. In his teens he was in garage bands—in his early twenties he took lessons from Bill Thrasher in Santa Barbara, who also taught Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina. While there, he taught guitar at Goleta Music and formed and performed in Top 40 bands.
Bill recommended him to a lady keyboard player who was looking for someone to make a New Years trio with. They hit it off, and decided to go on the road together, performing in hotels from California to New Orleans. Later, for American Cruise Lines, he led a 5-piece band that toured Alaska.
He studied with jazz guitar greats Ted Greene and Lenny Breau, and later went on to invent and patent some musical equipment. After eight years of traveling and promoting the product line in the US and Europe, he sold the company “Superstand,” to a competitor in Nashville.
Moving to Los Angeles, he graduated from the “Musician’s Institute”. Through music agents, he led bands that performed for weddings, corporate functions, large outdoor events, and two California Governors.
Having a variety of musical experiences behind him and wanting to teach a Fun and Easy method of learning an instrument, he opened Newport Guitar and Music in 2006. He offers a custom, comfortable learning atmosphere teaching guitar, ukulele and bass. The store also has quality instruments, accessories, gift certificates and restringing at great prices. 🙂
